Everyone is familiar with those acute moments when life feels unbearable. Because you feel incredibly overwhelmed. Because you feel so lost. Because it hurts more than you think you can handle.
The good news is that level of intensity, what you feel in those exact moments, cannot last.
The body and the psyche just can’t sustain it.
That doesn’t mean that the problem gets solved or that you have the answers you need. It just means, something else will happen. You will be required to do something that takes your mind away from the intensity. Or your body will fatigue.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had the chance to sit with people in the deepest, most intense pain. So much that I felt the need to check in on them to make sure they are OK because it was so much. I’m sure you’ve experienced the same when witnessing someone else’s struggle.
And they are OK.
They move past it, even though they were sure they would not be able to in my office.
This is what happens when you have the courage to allow that intensity to come in and you can be with it. (For literal instructions for how to be with it: read here)
Things might still not be resolved and another wave of intensity could come through. That’s OK. You survived all the previous waves.
Soon enough, because of your presence and allowing of the intensity, you will have made it through all the waves so that you can get to where you are headed through this challenge that feels so intense.
It’s just the courage to let it happen.
And, what can give you that courage is remembering:
“This is hard right now.
And it can’t last forever.
I can do hard things. I have done them before. I have even done them voluntarily. So I’m going to breathe and let this hard part happen, just for right now.”
